Middle to middle.

For the duration of the Exploring Conscious Territories exhibitions, we connect the cities, where the exhibitions are or were hosted, through soundportals. The soundscape of a place in the respective city center can be experienced in another town.

The soundportal Oaxaca – basel.

What does life sound like in Oaxaca de Juárez, México? The soundscape of a place in the center of Oaxaca, Macedonia Alcala, can be experienced live through the headphones. In return, this portal sends a live transmission of sounds from the Kaffeehaus Mitte in Basel to Oaxaca. Conversations cannot be overheard. The transmission is not stored.

The livestream takes place in December 23 and runs into January. The time difference is 7 hours.

In November 23, the portal in Basel shows recordings from various Día de los Muertos locations. The general hustle and bustle of the city, parades, a graveyard and visits to a market of the dead. Here the Oaxaceños buy everything related to the custom of Día de los muertos and seasonal treats. These include calaveras de azúcar, pan de muerto, sugar cane and cempacúchil for decorating the altar at home.

“Aquí la muerte no es miedo,
aquí es diversión”
