Sonic Echo

2023-2025
Contact microphones, pedals and tile

Sonic Echo is a site specific, interactive sound installation where the source of architecture becomes a musical instrument. Contact microphones embedded in bricks from Vorwerkstift capture vibrations from visitors’ movements on the surfaces, which are amplified and modulated using bass and guitar pedals. The Vorwerkstift bricks anchor its physical and historical context, allowing the material when played to carry and transmit its acoustic memory. As participants scratch, tap or stroke their actions create rippling soundscapes, enhanced by reverb and delay, evoking echoes of the material, of the architecture. The simultaneity factor of cause and effect, inviting visitors to explore the interplay of time, sound, and space.
